PBBM APPOINTS ANGARA-MATHAY TO LEAD TOURISM DRIVE

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has tapped Dita Angara-Mathay as the new Secretary of Tourism, a move that underscores the administration’s push to position the sector as a central pillar of economic growth.

Angara-Mathay, who previously served at the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Japan, brings with her a strong background in trade and investment promotion. During her tenure in Tokyo, she helped forge partnerships with Japanese firms — a vital source of capital, technology, and visitors for the Philippines.

She replaces Christina Frasco, who was removed from the post after facing controversies, including criticism over alleged self-promotion.

Malacañang emphasized that the appointment is intended to “reinforce tourism’s contribution to the economy by boosting employment, supporting local enterprises, and encouraging regional development.”

The Palace added that the administration aims to better link tourist arrivals with investment opportunities and domestic supply chains.

Angara-Mathay’s track record in advancing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is expected to shape a more cohesive tourism strategy — one that not only attracts visitors but also strengthens local industries.

Her familiarity with the Japanese market is seen as a strategic advantage, given Japan’s role as a major source of both tourists and long-term investments in the country.
