President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding media workers and reinforcing democratic institutions as he led the oath-taking of newly elected officers of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).
In his remarks, Marcos underscored the vital role of broadcast media in advancing truth, responsible journalism, and public service, while acknowledging the dangers faced by journalists in the country.
He noted that the Philippines “remains one of the most dangerous places for journalists,” stressing the urgency of addressing threats and violence against media practitioners.
“Hindi madaling magtanong, mag-ulat, at maglahad ng katotohanan—lalo na kung may panganib na kaakibat ito. This administration has made it clear that the safety and welfare of our journalists must be protected at all times,” Marcos said.
The President cited ongoing efforts to enhance protection mechanisms, including a recent agreement between the Presidential Task Force on Media Security and the National Bureau of Investigation to strengthen responses to threats. The task force has also partnered with the Public Attorney’s Office to provide legal assistance to journalists facing harassment or cases.
“Tinitiyak natin na sa bawat banta, may gobyernong handang magtanggol sa inyo,” he added.
Marcos further urged media organizations to take an active role in combating misinformation and disinformation, particularly on social media platforms.
“Kaugnay nito, hinihikayat ko rin ang mga grupo ng media na tulungan ang ating mga kababayan upang alamin at tukuyin ang totoo at kung ano ang fake news,” he said.
He revealed that the government is working with the Department of Information and Communications Technology to strengthen content safeguards through partnerships with technology firms such as Google and Meta.
The Presidential Communications Office has also launched “Oplan Kontra Fake News” to curb the spread of false information.
Marcos highlighted transparency initiatives being implemented through digital platforms and technologies, including the use of satellites and drones to monitor public projects.
“Kapag malaya ang pamamahayag at madaling makakuha ng tamang impormasyon, mas nagiging bukas ang pamahalaan,” he said.
Finally, the President called on KBP’s new leadership to continue fostering innovation and uphold broadcasting standards in coordination with the National Telecommunications Commission.
“Please continue to uphold the values that have guided you for more than five decades: The values of independence, responsibility, innovation and, of course, service to our people,” Marcos said.
