PH DECLARES NATIONAL ENERGY EMERGENCY AMID GLOBAL FUEL SUPPLY RISKS

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially declared a state of national energy emergency, citing growing concerns over the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on global fuel supply and price stability.

Through Executive Order No. 110, signed on Tuesday, March 24, the country will remain under an energy emergency for one year. The declaration aims to address potential disruptions in energy availability and cushion the domestic economy from rising oil prices.

Marcos emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating: “imminent danger” posed by the conflict to the nation’s energy supply, stressing that “urgent measures are necessary to ensure the stability and adequacy of the country’s energy supply.”

The order authorizes the government to carry out coordinated and responsive measures to mitigate risks stemming from volatility in global energy markets.

It also seeks to strengthen inter-agency collaboration to ensure sufficient energy supply and protect vulnerable sectors from the economic impact of fuel price increases.

Officials say the move is a proactive step to safeguard national interests as geopolitical tensions continue to threaten global energy stability.
