President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to deepen cooperation with the Holy See in advancing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), as both marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations on Wednesday, April 8.

Marcos highlighted the challenges faced by the Filipino diaspora, particularly seafarers, in seeking better opportunities abroad.
“The Philippines looks forward to deepening its collaboration with the Holy See on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration—the world’s first comprehensive intergovernmental plan to protect the rights of migrants,” he said.
The President emphasized the need for strong international partnerships amid global uncertainty.
“In a world that has become increasingly volatile, uncertain, and complex, the Philippines cannot face today’s challenges alone,” Marcos noted, adding that the country depends on partners like the Holy See in promoting just, humane, and inclusive societies.
The United Nations Network on Migration has recognized the Philippines as a leading advocate for migrant rights, actively supporting the GCM since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.

Marcos also underscored the shared values underpinning ties between Manila and the Vatican.
“Championing dialogue over division, reconciliation over conflict, and service over self-interest,” he said, citing peace, human dignity, and social justice as the foundation of the partnership.
He further pointed to the Holy See’s contributions to peacebuilding efforts in Mindanao, particularly in advancing interfaith dialogue and reconciliation initiatives, which he described as a “living testament to a shared faith and purpose.”
