PH MAINTAINS DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENT WITH MYANMAR AFTER JUNTA LEADER’S ELECTION

Malacañang announced that the Philippines will continue its diplomatic engagements with Myanmar following the election of junta chief Min Aung Hlaing as president.

In a statement on Friday, Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro will sustain consultations with Myanmar in her capacity as the Special Envoy of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Chair.

“The Philippines remains committed to support ASEAN’s collective efforts and encourages renewed momentum toward the full and effective implementation of the Five Point Consensus, particularly in achieving the cessation of violence and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar,” the Palace said.

Min Aung Hlaing secured the presidency after winning a parliamentary vote with 429 ballots, defeating retired general Nyo Saw, who garnered 126 votes.

The Palace emphasized that Manila’s engagement is aligned with ASEAN’s push to address the crisis in Myanmar, particularly through humanitarian aid and efforts to reduce violence.
