PNP BACKS LIDAR DRONES TO BOOST MANHUNT OPS

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has expressed support for the government’s plan to procure drones equipped with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology to enhance law enforcement and manhunt operations.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said LiDAR allows authorities to penetrate dense vegetation and generate detailed terrain maps beyond the capability of standard cameras, enabling quicker and more comprehensive data gathering across wide areas.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the acquisition would remove the tactical edge fugitives gain by hiding in difficult terrain.

“The Philippine National Police welcomes the plan of the DILG to procure drones with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) as this will certainly boost our operational capability.”

Remulla added that the drones are expected to be deployed in the coming months to track high-profile fugitives, including former BuCor chief Gerald Bantag, businessman Atong Ang, and individuals linked to the flood control scandal.

Nartatez stressed that adopting advanced technology will help modernize the police force and align it with international standards.

“As we aim to transition towards a technology-powered future through the use of drones and interconnected systems, we are also gearing to be at par with our counterparts overseas.”

He noted that LiDAR-equipped drones will strengthen tactical advantage while improving personnel safety, complementing the PNP’s existing unmanned aerial systems for real-time surveillance and reconnaissance.
