PNP CHIEF ORDERS STRONGER COASTAL WATCH AFTER ₱22-M DRUG HAUL

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has directed tighter coordination between police units and coastal communities following the recovery of more than ₱22 million worth of suspected shabu in Patnanungan, Quezon.

The illegal drugs, weighing over three kilograms, were discovered by a local fisherman who immediately turned them over to authorities.

Nartatez said the incident underscores the crucial role of seaside residents in safeguarding national security and curbing narcotics smuggling.

“The trust and confidence of the people to their police is one of the most efficient tools against criminal elements and illegal activities. We have been witnessing the positive results of this partnership, we have to sustain this effort for the benefit of everybody,” Nartatez said.

Investigators are now tracing the origin of the recovered packages, probing whether they were abandoned at sea or intended for distribution.

Authorities noted that drug syndicates may dump shipments due to intensified maritime patrols, with some drifting into fishing areas and posing risks to civilians.

Nartatez also reminded the public to exercise caution when encountering suspicious items.

“Safety is the priority. Do not touch or open the packages as they could be dangerous or contaminated. Immediately mark the location if possible, stay away, and report it to the nearest police station or Maritime Group unit right away,” he said.

The PNP chief emphasized that the fight against illegal drugs extends beyond land-based operations, highlighting the importance of vigilance along the country’s vast coastlines.
