The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday expressed readiness to support the national government’s crisis committee formed to address the impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on the country.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier ordered the creation of the committee in response to rising fuel prices driven by escalating tensions in the region.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured that police resources and personnel are prepared for deployment if needed.
“We are ready to provide support in case our services are tapped by the crisis committee. Our resources and assets are ready to be deployed once the need arises,” Nartatez said in a statement.
The conflict has already pushed fuel prices significantly higher, with diesel expected to rise by ₱16 to ₱18 per liter and gasoline by ₱9 to ₱11 per liter. In some areas, diesel prices may exceed ₱120 per liter.
To mitigate the impact, the government has started distributing cash aid to affected sectors, including tricycle drivers.
Meanwhile, transport groups have staged strikes calling for stronger government intervention.
Nartatez highlighted the PNP’s role in past national emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic, where police enforced quarantine protocols, assisted in relief distribution, and maintained public safety.
“The PNP’s commitment remains unwavering. We will support the crisis committee in any way necessary to protect the welfare of our citizens,” he said.
