Roblox is considering the Philippines as a potential site for a data center, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said Monday, as part of the gaming platform’s expansion plans.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda revealed in a televised interview that the investment is still under review, with Roblox evaluating factors such as connectivity and power availability following recent meetings with Philippine officials.
“They’re studying to put their data center dito,” Aguda said, referring to Roblox’s ongoing assessment.
Aguda explained that the idea of establishing a local presence emerged during discussions with Roblox executives, which initially focused on safety measures for the platform after complaints raised by parents.
He added that the government presented its broader digital transformation agenda to the company, highlighting improvements in fiber internet connectivity and energy supply to strengthen the Philippines’ case as a hub for large-scale digital infrastructure.
“Roblox is considering, habang nag-uusap kami, pinakita rin namin yung plano ng digital transformation ni Presidente sa Pilipinas… The fiber optic cable, the power availability,” Aguda said.
The DICT chief noted that a local data center could enhance service delivery and support the country’s growing digital ecosystem, as more Filipinos engage with online platforms.
Aguda also suggested that such an investment would signal stronger long-term commitment from global technology firms, which often limit their Philippine operations to marketing or regional offices.
“Kasi ang problem sa mga social media platform, hindi sila nagtatayo dito ng office nila. Nagtatayo lang ng marketing arm,” he said.
The potential move underscores the government’s push to attract digital infrastructure investments, positioning the Philippines as a competitive player in the global tech landscape.
