RTC ORDERS SUMMONS IN LEVISTE–CASTRO LIBEL CASE

A Regional Trial Court in Balayan, Batangas has ordered the issuance of summons in the civil libel case filed by Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste against Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro.

In an order from Branch 11 dated January 28, 2026, the court said it was giving due course to the complaint after the case was raffled to the sala.

“The Branch Clerk of Court is ordered to issue Summons in accordance with existing rules,” the order read.

It further directed that: “Plaintiff’s counsel is directed to submit a Notice of Appearance in compliance with Rule 13-A of the Amended Rules of Court.”

The case stemmed from statements made by Castro in a vlog regarding a solar energy company founded by Leviste.

The lawmaker described Castro’s remarks as “untrue, reckless, and malicious,” particularly her claim that he sold a company holding a government franchise and her alleged insinuation that he “flipped” the franchise without congressional approval.

Leviste maintained that the company he sold does not have a franchise. He is seeking ₱100 million in moral damages, ₱10 million in exemplary damages, and ₱1 million in attorney’s fees.

In an earlier statement, Castro said her comments were based on the pronouncements of the Ombudsman and Leviste himself, adding that she believes the libel complaint is meant to silence her.
