SENATE ASSIGNS 17 COMMITTEE CHAIRMANSHIPS FOR THE 20TH CONGRESS

The Senate has officially designated committee chairmanships to 17 senators for the 20th Congress, according to information released by the upper chamber.

The appointed committee chairs are as follows:

  • Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada – National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification, and Reconciliation
  • Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva – Rules
  • Senator Rodante Marcoleta – Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations (Blue Ribbon); Trade, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship
  • Senator Bam Aquino – Basic Education
  • Senator Kiko Pangilinan – Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform
  • Senator Alan Peter Cayetano – Accounts; Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education; Justice and Human Rights; Science and Technology
  • Senator Pia Cayetano – Energy; Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation, and Futures Thinking; Ways and Means
  • Senator Imee Marcos – Cooperatives; Foreign Relations; Labor, Employment, and Human Resources Development
  • Senator Robinhood Padilla – Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes; Cultural Communities and Muslim Affairs; Public Information and Mass Media
  • Senator Win Gatchalian – Finance
  • Senator Erwin Tulfo – Games and Amusement; Social Justice, Welfare, and Rural Development
  • Senator Bong Go – Health and Demography; Sports; Youth
  • Senator JV Ejercito – Tourism; Local Government
  • Senator Raffy Tulfo – Migrant Workers; Public Services
  • Senator Bato dela Rosa – Public Order and Dangerous Drugs
  • Senator Camille Villar – Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate
  • Senator Mark Villar – Public Works

At present, no committee chairmanships have been awarded to minority senators Tito Sotto, Loren Legarda, Migz Zubiri, Risa Hontiveros, and Ping Lacson. Senator Lito Lapid, despite being part of the majority bloc, has also yet to secure a chairmanship.

Nine Senate committees remain without leaders, namely: Banks, Financial Institutions and Currencies; Civil Service, Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation; Culture and the Arts; Economic Affairs; Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation; Ethics and Privileges; Government Corporations and Public Enterprises; Urban Planning, Housing, and Resettlement; and Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality.

Sources indicate that Sotto is eyeing the Ethics Committee, while Hontiveros hopes to retain leadership of the Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality Committee.
