Senators are calling for a more coordinated government response to shield Filipinos from the impact of soaring oil prices, which have surged amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito urged the creation of an inter-agency body to manage austerity measures and prepare for potential fuel supply disruptions.
“‘Wag na natin hintayin na lumala pa ang krisis, dapat naghahanda na tayo,” he said, warning of a “domino effect” on food, transport, and other essential goods if oil supplies are disrupted.
Fellow Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros stressed the need for a broader approach beyond suspending fuel excise taxes, highlighting her proposed ₱52.8 billion subsidy package, which includes ₱12 billion for transport assistance.
“Kailangan makinig at umaksyon ang pamahalaan sa daing ng ating mga tsuper at commuter,” she said, urging faster rollout of aid to drivers and operators.
Diesel prices breached the triple-digit mark last week, hitting record highs and straining transport workers.
In response, tricycle drivers in Metro Manila have received ₱5,000 in fuel subsidies, while Malacañang announced that nationwide expansion of the program will begin on April 6.
