SET DISMISSES QUO WARRANTO PETITION AGAINST SENATOR ERWIN TULFO

The Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) has dismissed the quo warranto petition seeking to unseat Senator Erwin Tulfo over questions surrounding his citizenship.

In its resolution, the tribunal ruled that the petition was “insufficient in form,” citing Rule 23(a) of the 2020 SET Rules. The decision was signed by SET chairperson and Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, along with members Senators Pia Cayetano, Robin Padilla, Kiko Pangilinan, and Bam Aquino.

The petition, filed on July 15, 2025 by Berteni Cataluña Causing, alleged that Tulfo held American citizenship, was disloyal to the Republic, violated the prohibition on political dynasties, and lacked the required academic qualifications.

Tulfo welcomed the ruling, describing it as a “direct and clear affirmation” of the Commission on Elections’ earlier dismissal of disqualification cases filed against him during the 2025 elections.

He added,

“Bagama’t may nakahaing quo warranto case noong bagong pasok pa lamang tayo sa Senado, kailanma’y di naman ito naging hadlang sa tapat nating pagseserbisyo. Tuloy lang po sa trabaho.”
