Former Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson on Monday called on religious and youth groups to mount a “one time, big time” rally against government corruption, saying he would begin urging members of the opposition to join the campaign.
In a press briefing, Singson described President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as his “former friend,” claiming he only revealed corruption issues to portray himself as a hero.
He criticized Marcos for failing to jail his cousin, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who has been linked to alleged irregular flood control projects—allegations Romualdez has denied.
“Maliwanag, harap-harapan itong ginagawa nila. Sila ang may kagagawan nito. It is not enough that Martin Romualdez should be charged alone. Pareho sila (Marcos). Sila ang nakakaalam nito,” Singson said.
He suggested the rally could be held in February, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolution, but stressed the decision rests with religious and opposition groups.
“Nasa grupo yan. Ang magde-decide ang religious organizations, the opposition, lahat ng nagmamahal sa ating bansa. Tawagin niyo lahat, tawagan niyo ako. I will prefer yung kabataan ang magsabi ng date,” he said.
Singson underscored the role of the youth, invoking Jose Rizal’s words.
“Dapat kasama ang kabataan dito kasi ninakaw ang future ng kabataan…Ang kabataan ang kinabukasan ng ating bansa, yan ang sabi ni Jose Rizal…Future niyo ito… tumayo kayo, huwag kayo matakot, kasi future niyo ito,” he added.
