The Senate is prepared to conduct the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte should the Supreme Court (SC) decide to reverse its earlier ruling that declared the Articles of Impeachment against her unconstitutional.
This was confirmed by Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III during a news forum on Wednesday, October 22, when asked if the impeachment proceedings could still push through.
“Personally, yes, the answer is in the affirmative,” Sotto said.
“The Senate itself, yes. If the SC says they are reversing their decision, then we will move to reclaim the Articles of Impeachment from the archives,” he added.
Last July 25, the Supreme Court ruled that the impeachment complaint filed against Duterte was unconstitutional for violating the one-year bar rule stated in the Constitution, according to SC spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting.
Under the ruling, no new impeachment complaint may be filed against the Vice President before February 6, 2026.
