SUPER TYPHOON NANDO WEAKENS, SET TO EXIT PAR

Super Typhoon Nando, one of the strongest cyclones to batter the country this year, is losing strength as it heads out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said Tuesday morning.

In its 5AM bulletin, PAGASA reported that Nando was packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph. As of 4 a.m., the typhoon was last spotted 265 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan, moving westward.

Wind Signals Raised

  • Signal No. 3: Ilocos Norte, northwest Apayao (Calanasan), northwest mainland Cagayan (Sanchez-Mira, Santa Praxedes, Claveria), and the western part of the Babuyan Islands (Panuitan, Calayan, Dalupiri, Mabaag, Barit, Fuga).
  • Signal No. 2: Batanes, remaining Babuyan Islands, northern and central Cagayan towns, the rest of Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, parts of Mountain Province and Benguet, Ilocos Sur, and northern La Union.

Habagat and Rough Seas

The southwest monsoon, enhanced by Nando’s circulation, will continue to whip strong to gale-force gusts across Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, and the Visayas. A gale warning remains hoisted over the northern seaboards of Luzon.

Storm Surge and Heavy Rains

“There is a moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights reaching one to three meters within the next 12 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur,” PAGASA said.

Meanwhile, the combined effect of Nando and the southwest monsoon will continue to dump heavy rains over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Abra, Benguet, Batanes, Cagayan, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro.
