TRASLACION RITES EYED FOR CHANGES AFTER RECORD-LONG PROCESSION

Organizers of the Traslacion of the Jesus Nazareno are considering changes to future rites after this year’s penitential procession stretched to nearly 31 hours, the longest in its history.

According to Fr. Robert Arellano, spokesperson for Nazareno 2026, an assessment will be conducted to determine what adjustments need to be made for upcoming Traslacion activities.

The planned review follows several incidents during the procession, including the deaths of three devotees and one photojournalist.

Arellano also said that the lower portion of the andas, the carriage bearing the image of the Black Nazarene, was damaged during the event.

Organizers are now weighing possible changes such as redesigning the andas, shortening the route, or strengthening crowd management measures, especially after the number of participants was estimated at around seven million.

Meanwhile, Quiapo Church technical adviser Alex Irasga noted that many young devotees attempted to climb onto the andas, which significantly slowed the movement of the procession.
