TRILLANES RULES OUT 2028 RUN, TO BACK ‘RIGHTFUL CANDIDATE’

Former Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV has confirmed he will not seek any elective post in the 2028 elections, saying his priority is to push for accountability and support what he called the “rightful candidate” in the next national polls.

In a television interview, Trillanes said his decision was final despite his name being floated in political discussions ahead of the 2028 race.

“I made a decision that I will not run, especially for a national post,” the former senator said when asked about his political plans.

He added that he was not considering a local bid either, including another attempt for the mayoral post in Caloocan City.

“Kasi ang tinututukan natin ay itong darating na halalan, na kailangan maitulak namin, ako sususporta ako doon sa karapat-dapat na kandidato, so I won’t be running,” he said.

Trillanes’ announcement comes as political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2028 elections, with potential candidates emerging early amid impeachment complaints and criminal cases involving senior government officials, including President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and personalities linked to the flood control projects controversy.

He did not name any specific candidate he intends to support nor detail the role he plans to play during the campaign.

Trillanes, a staunch critic of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his family, served in the Senate from 2007 to 2019.
