Senator Erwin Tulfo has proposed integrating West Philippine Sea (WPS) education into basic and tertiary curricula to inform students about the maritime disputes amid Chinese harassment.
Tulfo emphasized the need for young Filipinos to understand what they should defend.
“We have to stand as a unified nation in defending what is ours. A good way to do it is to capacitate Filipinos with accurate, evidence-based information. This will empower Filipino citizens to actively participate in the protection of our maritime rights,” he said.
The proposal calls on the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) to include WPS-related topics and materials in school programs.
It also recommends that agencies such as the National Security Council (NSC) develop learning materials, conduct capacity-building programs for teachers, and provide accessible digital and printed community-based resources.
A nationwide information campaign on WPS issues is also part of the plan.
