Metro Manila Council (MMC) President and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora is urging the public to be prepared and proactive to help minimize the impact of the possible “Big One” earthquake.
In a Facebook post on Monday, October 13, Mayor Zamora reminded everyone to understand their role in disaster preparedness and to take action to ensure safety should a major quake occur.
“In light of the recent earthquakes that have struck our nation, concerns continue to grow that the ‘Big One’ could hit Metro Manila at any time. I urge all our citizens—not only those from the National Capital Region but also from all regions across our country—to recognize their crucial role in disaster preparedness. Your vigilance and active participation can greatly help save lives and minimize property damage,” he said.
Zamora also called on his fellow mayors to strengthen capacity-building programs for disaster response personnel and citizens alike, while ensuring that local government units (LGUs) are fully equipped for emergencies.
“To this end, I encourage my fellow mayors to continue strengthening capacity-building programs for disaster management officers, staff, and our citizens. I also urge our local officials to ensure that all local government units are adequately equipped with emergency vehicles, equipment, and supplies to enable a prompt and effective response in the event of a disaster,” he added.
The mayor likewise emphasized the need for continuous inspection and monitoring of infrastructures, both public and private, to guarantee safety and structural integrity.
“Furthermore, I recommend the strict and continuous monitoring by the Offices of the Building Official (OBO) of both government buildings and private establishments, to certify the structural integrity of these infrastructures and ensure public safety,” he stated.
Zamora also shared basic safety reminders in case of an earthquake, while assuring that the local government is ready to assist those who may be affected.
“To our kababayans, I appeal for your continued vigilance and preparedness. It is our shared responsibility to always be ready. During an earthquake, remain calm, take cover under a sturdy object, stay away from glass windows and unstable structures, and move to open areas when it is safe to do so. Familiarize yourselves with the designated evacuation sites near your homes, schools, and workplaces,” Zamora said.
He concluded by reminding the public that individual preparedness is key in the crucial hours following a disaster.
“Your local governments stand ready to assist you, but your immediate response in the crucial first hours after a disaster can make a significant difference in ensuring your safety and that of your loved ones. Let us remain alert, informed, and united in our collective effort to build a safer and more resilient Philippines,” he added.
The mayor’s statement comes amid renewed fears of “The Big One” potentially striking Metro Manila and nearby provinces, following a series of strong earthquakes that have recently hit various parts of the country.
