The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has expressed deep concern over what it described as “delaying tactics” by the Senate regarding the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
This comes after the Senate voted 18-5 on June 10 to return the Articles of Impeachment to the House of Representatives, a move initiated by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
“We are disturbed by the delay in the Senate in executing the constitutional demand for the impeachment process of the Vice President,” the CBCP said in an official statement.
CBCP President Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David emphasized that impeachment, if done in truth and justice, remains a legitimate democratic tool for transparency and accountability.
He further warned that the Senate’s actions may not only violate the 1987 Constitution but also erode public trust in the institution.
“Though impeachment trials are political and quasi-judicial in nature, the ultimate goal is to seek the truth behind the serious accusations involving corruption and betrayal of public trust against the Vice President,” Cardinal David stressed.
