DBM, MANILA CITY PUSH CREATION OF HALAL TOWN IN QUIAPO

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has thrown its full support behind the creation of a Halal Town in Manila, a landmark initiative designed to foster cultural harmony, generate jobs, and boost tourism in the capital city.

Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso recently led an on-site inspection in Quiapo, where the project is envisioned to rise as a modern halal and cultural hub—a fusion of heritage preservation and inclusive urban development.

Pangandaman said the initiative reflects the government’s vision of unity and inclusivity while opening more economic opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“Alam n’yo po ba itong Halal project (culinary hub) is a multi-billion industry po?” Pangandaman said, emphasizing the vast potential of halal industries—from food to fashion—to uplift local livelihoods.

The proposed Halal Town will feature halal-certified food stalls, craft and textile shops, and small businesses, highlighted by Muslim-Filipino architecture, cultural archways, and smart lighting. Pangandaman revealed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed interest in supporting the construction of a mosque in Quiapo, envisioned as the area’s spiritual centerpiece.

She said the DBM is exploring the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) to help finance the project once finalized.

Domagoso thanked President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and the DBM for their backing, noting that the project would also benefit Mindanao-based entrepreneurs bringing their products to Manila.

During her visit, Pangandaman also checked progress on urban renewal projects ahead of the city’s hosting of the ASEAN Summit in 2026, including the proposed Central Park downtown.

She said around ₱78 million has been released through the “Green, Green, Green” program to expand public spaces and improve infrastructure.

“Under President Marcos’ leadership, our investment in projects rooted in heritage and community will serve as a foundation for a truly inclusive and prosperous Philippines,” Pangandaman said.
