The City Government of Manila has collected around ₱160 million in taxes from contractors involved in various flood control projects across the city, Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso reported on Monday.
Speaking at the bimonthly Kapihan ng Samahang Plaridel forum held at the Rizal Park Hotel, Moreno said the amount was generated following a strict reminder issued to contractors about fulfilling their tax obligations to the city.
“You may belittle us but mind you, we guarantee you, kahit saan sulok kayo ng Pilipinas, we will file cases against you based on violation of our Tax Code,” he warned.
According to Moreno, the city government managed to collect the ₱160 million in less than 30 days, showing the administration’s resolve to enforce tax compliance.
“And true enough, as we speak today, I just want to share with you, your city government already collected about ₱160 million, in less than 30 days, from the contractors,” he said.
The mayor added that the collected taxes were immediately used to settle several financial obligations, including ₱58 million in debts owed to the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) and ₱25 million in unpaid dues to teachers.
“They were past years’ obligations to teachers,” Moreno explained.
Aside from the city’s financial updates, Moreno also announced that a medical and rescue team from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) had been deployed to Cebu to aid victims of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck last week.
“We have sent a medical mission to help the earthquake victims,” he said.
