The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that a total of 3,685 aftershocks have been recorded following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu earlier this week.
In its Friday morning update, October 3, 2025, PHIVOLCS said that around 18 of the aftershocks were felt on land, ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 5.1.
PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said more aftershocks are expected in the coming days.
“Inaasahan natin na magkakaroon pa ng mga aftershocks in the next few days. Sometimes the aftershocks would last for several weeks,” Bacolcol stated.
Despite this, he clarified that the frequency of aftershocks has been steadily decreasing.
“Habang tumatagal naman, bumababa ang number ng aftershocks natin, and humihina din yung magnitude,” he explained.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in Bogo City, where an estimated 47,221 families—or 170,959 individuals—were affected. Around 200,000 people were also displaced from their homes.
Meanwhile, a well-known funeral service provider extended aid to grieving families.
“During this extremely difficult time, St. Peter Chapels will provide free funeral services for those who lost their lives during the Cebu earthquake as our support to their grieving families,” the company announced.
