The Philippine National Police (PNP) declared the 13-hour procession of the Poong Hesus Nazareno in Manila peaceful, with no fatalities recorded despite the massive turnout of devotees.
The procession began at 11:30 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, April 2, and concluded at 12:52 p.m. on Good Friday, April 3, when the andas returned to Quiapo Church.
Authorities said a total of 3,160 police personnel were deployed along the procession route to ensure public safety and maintain order. By early afternoon, approximately 37,500 devotees were actively participating, while overall attendance reached 517,650, based on data from church officials.
Medical teams attended to 397 minor incidents throughout the event, but no deaths were reported.
PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended both law enforcement personnel and devotees for their cooperation, which contributed to the orderly conduct of the religious event.
“Ipinapakita natin na kahit sa dami ng tao, kayang panatilihin ang kaayusan at kaligtasan. Our officers performed exceptionally, and the cooperation of the devotees was key to a peaceful procession.”
He also urged the public to continue practicing safety measures during large gatherings.
“We remind everyone to continue observing safety precautions during mass gatherings, respect one another, and remain vigilant.”
The PNP likewise expressed gratitude to its personnel, volunteers, and the public for helping ensure a safe and incident-free observance of Good Friday in Quiapo.
