UP WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM ENDS 11-GAME LOSING STREAK VS ATENEO

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons ended an 11-game losing streak against Ateneo de Manila University with a thrilling five-set victory, 17-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-14, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.

Three-time Best Middle Blocker Niña Ytang led UP with 15 points, finishing the match with a decisive block against Zey Pacia.

Irah Jaboneta added 14 points, eight digs, and seven receptions, while Nigerian import Fina Ali contributed 13 points.

“Finally, we found a way to play our own game because we were worrying too much about what was happening on the other side. So, when we found that kind of rhythm, that kind of game that we like more, we became more effective,” UP coach Fabio Menta said.

For Ateneo, JLo Delos Santos, returning from a torn ACL, scored 21 points with 11 digs, while rookie Ana Hermosura had 19 points. Middle blocker Donna De Leon added 15 points, but the Blue Eagles suffered their second straight defeat.

In men’s volleyball, University of Santo Tomas defeated De La Salle University, 25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 25-19, led by Josh Ybañez’s 22 points. Meanwhile, Ateneo also bested UP, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18.

Standings: UST improved to 1-1, Ateneo and UP are tied at 1-1, while La Salle remains winless after two matches.
