WAKANA YAMAZAKI ON HIATUS; DETECTIVE CONAN REPLACEMENT ANNOUNCED

TOKYO, Japan — Wakana Yamazaki, the longtime voice of Ran Mouri in the hit anime Detective Conan, is taking a medical hiatus due to health concerns, production staff confirmed this week.

The announcement was posted on the official Detective Conan anime website and by her agency, Aoni Production. The 60-year-old voice actress will suspend all professional activities “for the time being” as she focuses on treatment and recovery. Production staff emphasized that Yamazaki’s health remains the top priority following more than three decades of work on the franchise.

Yamazaki has voiced Ran Mouri since Detective Conan began airing in 1996, making her one of the series’ most enduring cast members.

Temporary replacement confirmed

To maintain the anime’s broadcast schedule, veteran voice actress Akemi Okamura will temporarily assume the role of Ran Mouri. Okamura is widely recognized for voicing Nami in One Piece. Her first episode as Ran is scheduled to air on March 14, 2026.

Production officials noted Okamura’s extensive experience and familiarity with long-running series, adding that Yamazaki had previously stepped in to support Okamura’s role in One Piece, underscoring the professional respect shared between the two actresses.

Upcoming film remains on schedule

Despite the hiatus, Yamazaki’s performance in the upcoming Detective Conan feature film, Fallen Angel of the Highway, will proceed as planned. Staff confirmed that she completed her voice recordings prior to taking leave. The film is set to premiere in Japan on April 10, 2026.

Industry and fan support

Following the announcement, fans and fellow voice actors expressed support for Yamazaki across social media, acknowledging her long-standing contribution to the franchise and wishing her a full recovery.

A defining voice of the franchise

For nearly three decades, Yamazaki’s portrayal of Ran Mouri has been central to Detective Conan’s emotional continuity and identity. Her temporary departure marks a significant moment for the long-running series, which has maintained remarkable cast stability since its debut.

As Akemi Okamura steps into the role, both staff and fans remain hopeful for Yamazaki’s recovery and eventual return to the character that has become synonymous with her voice.
