The announcement, made through Netflix’s official channels and widely covered by anime news outlets, features key character reveals and an early look at the 1890s American setting that forms the backdrop for the latest JoJo chapter.
A New Race and New Heroes
Steel Ball Run adapts the seventh arc of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure saga, following Johnny Joestar, a former jockey who is paraplegic, and his enigmatic ally Gyro Zeppeli as they enter the grueling 5,000 km Steel Ball Run race across an alternate-universe America. With a $50 million grand prize on the line, the story weaves together western adventure, supernatural Stand battles, and deep character development, promising a mix of high-stakes action and emotional storytelling.
New key visuals, created by character designer and chief animation director Daisuke Tsumagari, spotlight Johnny and Gyro, highlighting the partnership at the heart of this adaptation.
First Trailer, Global Release
Netflix’s official trailer, shared across its Tudum platform and YouTube channel, offers fans their first in-depth glimpse of the animation style, tone, and dynamic sequences that have defined JoJo’s animated adaptations. The series will be available to subscribers in over 190 countries starting March 19, according to Netflix’s release schedule.
Returning Studio and Creative Team
Steel Ball Run is produced by David Production, the studio behind all prior JoJo anime entries. Key staff from earlier seasons including directors Yasuhiro Kimura and Hideya Takahashi, series director Toshiyuki Kato, and composer Yugo Kanno are set to return, promising continuity in the series’ unique style and storytelling.
Originally serialized in Japan from 2004 to 2011, Steel Ball Run is recognized for its ambitious scope and the introduction of a new continuity within the JoJo universe. The adaptation is seen as a milestone for long-time fans and new viewers alike.
