The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated formal coordination with international law enforcement agencies and concerned government offices following reports that former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co has been detained in Prague, Czech Republic.
The development comes after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed late Thursday that Co is currently in the custody of Czech authorities amid allegations linked to anomalous flood control projects.
Verification Still Ongoing
Despite the presidential announcement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it is still awaiting official documentation and detailed confirmation regarding Co’s exact legal status abroad.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police force is working closely with relevant agencies and international counterparts to verify the situation through formal diplomatic and legal channels.
“The PNP is coordinating with concerned government agencies and international law enforcement counterparts to verify the details of this development through official channels,” Nartatez said in a statement.
Preparing for Possible Legal Proceedings
The PNP leadership stressed its support for the administration’s handling of the case, noting that the priority remains adherence to international legal processes and coordination for possible repatriation.
“In line with the President’s statement, the PNP stands ready to provide necessary assistance and support in ensuring that all legal processes are properly observed, including coordination for his possible return to the Philippines,” Nartatez added.
Authorities said Co has been a subject of ongoing investigations related to alleged irregularities in large-scale infrastructure and flood mitigation projects funded by public resources.
Further updates are expected once official confirmation is received from Interpol channels or Czech law enforcement authorities, as Philippine agencies continue to validate the reported detention.
