AIRASIA PH TIGHTENS RULES ON POWER BANKS AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES

AirAsia Philippines has rolled out updated guidelines on the use and carriage of portable electronic devices (PEDs), including stricter policies on power banks, as part of its ongoing efforts to “enhance passenger safety.”

In a statement released Thursday, April 30, the airline said it is reinforcing safety protocols to reduce potential risks linked to lithium-powered devices commonly carried by travelers. The new measures align with global aviation standards to mitigate the risk of battery-related incidents in the cabin.

Under the revised rules, passengers are now allowed to bring a maximum of two power banks onboard, with each unit not exceeding 100 watt-hours (Wh), or approximately 27,000 mAh. The airline clarified that power banks will be treated separately from spare batteries.

To ensure safety during flights, power banks must be properly stored either in the seat pocket or under the passenger’s seat. The airline strictly prohibits placing these devices in overhead compartments or checked baggage. Furthermore, authorities may confiscate damaged or defective power banks at the airport.

AirAsia Philippines emphasized that other common electronic devices—such as mobile phones, laptops, cameras, watches, calculators, and camcorders—remain permitted onboard.

However, devices powered by lithium or lithium-ion batteries exceeding 100Wh but not more than 160Wh will require prior airline approval and must be for personal use only.

The airline also reiterated the following safety requirements:

  • Spare Batteries: All spare or loose batteries must be carried in cabin baggage and individually protected (e.g., in original packaging or with taped terminals) to prevent short circuits.
  • Charging Ban: The use and charging of power banks are strictly prohibited at all times during the flight.
  • Prohibited in Checked Bags: E-cigarettes and self-balancing battery-powered devices (such as hoverboards) continue to be banned in checked baggage due to fire safety concerns.

AirAsia encouraged all passengers to review the full guidelines on electronic devices and battery safety through its official website before heading to the airport.
