Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Monday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to apprehending gambling tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang and former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co, asserting that both fugitives will eventually face justice.
During an ambush interview, Nartatez confirmed that while there are no major breakthroughs regarding their current locations, specialized operational teams are following “documented information” to track the high-profile runaways.
“May corresponding operational plan ‘yan, at patuloy na tinututukan ng ating mga team. Soon, mahuhuli din natin sila,” Nartatez said.
THE MANHUNT FOR ATONG ANG
The pursuit of Ang has intensified following his alleged involvement in the disappearances and killings of at least 34 cockfighting enthusiasts (sabungeros). Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla recently revealed that Ang is now the subject of an INTERPOL Red Notice.
Despite the international alert, Remulla disclosed that Ang was spotted in the Calabarzon region as recently as two weeks ago. The tycoon is reportedly evading capture by moving in a small group of three and transferring to different “safe houses” every three to five days to stay ahead of authorities.
ZALDY CO’S INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENTS
The status of Zaldy Co remains a complex diplomatic matter. The former chairman of the House Appropriations Committee is no longer in Czech custody and has reportedly moved to France, where he is seeking political asylum.
Co’s legal troubles stem from his time in the Czech Republic, where he was initially detained over travel documentation issues while allegedly attempting to enter Germany. He faces serious charges in the Philippines, including graft and malversation, related to a ₱289.5 million “ghost” road dike project in Oriental Mindoro.
Malacañang continues to monitor Co’s asylum plea, while the PNP maintains that coordination with international partners remains a priority to facilitate his eventual return to the country.
