PH AND VIETNAM PURSUE LONG-TERM RICE TRADE DEAL AT ASEAN SUMMIT

Food security emerged as a top priority at the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Cebu on Thursday, as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng moved to solidify a strategic rice partnership.

During a bilateral meeting held on the summit’s sidelines, the two leaders agreed to investigate the establishment of a long-term rice trade mechanism.

The proposed framework is designed to stabilize the rice supply between the nations, ensuring the Philippines has a dependable source of the staple grain while shielding both markets from regional economic volatility.

Vietnam has historically served as a critical rice supplier for the Philippines, and officials noted that this new arrangement would further reinforce Hanoi and Manila’s collaborative efforts to manage domestic food availability and maintain price stability.

Beyond agriculture, the leaders addressed pressing regional security threats. Their dialogue touched upon joint initiatives to dismantle transnational criminal syndicates, specifically targeting the rise of human trafficking and illicit online scam hubs across Southeast Asia.

The meeting also served as a celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations, with both heads of state exploring ways to enhance tourism and economic cooperation.

President Marcos formally congratulated Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng on his recent appointment, welcoming him to his inaugural participation in the ASEAN Summit.
