GATCHALIAN PUSHES FOR SSS AND GSIS LOANS TO SUBSIDIZE EV ADOPTION

Senator Win Gatchalian called on the Social Security System (SSS) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) this Friday to offer specialized loan programs aimed at helping members purchase electric vehicles (EVs) as fuel prices remain high.

The senator, who serves as the vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Energy, argued that accessible financing would accelerate the Philippines’ shift toward sustainable transport and decrease the nation’s reliance on imported petroleum.

“Marami ang nagnanais na bumili ng EV, ngunit nahahadlangan ng mataas nitong presyo,” the senator said.

Gatchalian noted that while many Filipinos are interested in switching to electric alternatives, the initial cost remains a significant barrier.

He suggested that the savings generated from avoiding gasoline and diesel could be used by members to settle their monthly car loan amortizations.

“Kung mayroong mga loan facility para sa pagbili ng EV, mas matutulungan ang ating mga kababayan na hirap na sa patuloy na pagtaas ng presyo ng gasolina at diesel,” he continued.

Beyond individual ownership, Gatchalian urged the government to expedite the transition of public utility vehicles (PUVs) under the modernization program to protect drivers and operators from volatile global oil markets.

He also emphasized that ramping up infrastructure, specifically charging stations, is critical to building consumer confidence in the EV ecosystem.
