San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora has deflected inquiries regarding a potential transition to national politics for the 2028 elections, maintaining that his immediate objective is to complete his concluding term in local office successfully.
During a broadcast interview, Zamora deliberately avoided confirming whether he plans to launch a bid for the Senate in the next national election cycle.
“I’m focused on finishing my term strong because I know na itong pagkakataong ibinigay sa akin … alam niyo, pinaghirapan ko ito,” Zamora stated.
As an incumbent serving his third consecutive term, constitutional limits legally prevent Zamora from pursuing another immediate reelection as the city’s chief executive in 2028.
Aside from leading San Juan, he currently commands significant political influence across the country as the national president of the League of Cities of the Philippines and as the head of the Metro Manila Council.
“I’m honored that I have been entrusted with these two very vital positions,” he said.
Emphasizing the expansive scale of his concurrent leadership duties, the mayor added:
“Isipin ninyo, 149 city mayors yan from all over the country and all 17 Metro Manila mayors.”
When questioned about who might succeed him to lead San Juan, the mayor revealed that his local coalition has not finalized their endorsement for a preferred successor.
“We have not determined yet,” he explained, expressing confidence in the city’s future trajectory. “Basta susundin niya itong governance framework na ipinapatupad natin, tiwala ako na papagkatiwalaan din ito.”
Zamora initially secured the San Juan mayoralty in 2019 after a decisive campaign against Janella Ejercito, the daughter of Senator Jinggoy Estrada. The political victory concluded the Estrada-Ejercito family’s uninterrupted, five-decade control over the city’s top executive post.
