The local government of Pasig has officially introduced a wide-reaching financial literacy program designed to provide market vendors, transport operators, senior citizens, and other community groups with practical budgeting skills and defenses against monetary scams.
On June 16, city officials signed a formal partnership with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the BDO Foundation during a ceremony at the Pasig City People’s Hall. The joint venture focuses on improving personal financial choices and protecting locals from fraudulent schemes.
Mayor Vico Sotto emphasized that boosting the community’s financial knowledge requires collective effort.
“Kailangang magtrabaho tayong lahat para mapataas ang lebel ng financial literacy sa ating lunsod, sa ating bayan, dahil marami sa mga problema natin, pwede namang ma-solusyunan kung sana mas marunong tayo mag-manage, maghawak ng pera natin,” Sotto stated.
The educational rollout is designed for a diverse mix of residents, including students, small business owners, public utility drivers, single parents, and displaced families.
BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat explained that the core goal is to make essential financial services safe, straightforward, and welcoming for all citizens.
To keep the program running long-term, the BSP and BDO Foundation will prepare local leaders to act as educators while supplying the necessary training guides and technical support.
“Through this collaboration, we hope to give practical knowledge and tools that can truly be applied and make a difference in people’s everyday lives,” said BDO Foundation President Mario Deriquito.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda also attended the launch, pointing out that digital payment channels can significantly boost transaction speeds and clarity. The rollout aligns with an ongoing central bank strategy to pair local authorities with private firms to cultivate financially sound communities.
