A diverse coalition of supporters formally established the “Risa Na, Cebu” movement at a local university on Saturday, July 4, rallying behind Senator Risa Hontiveros as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
The launch brought together representatives from multiple sectors, including youth, labor groups, urban poor, fisherfolk, women, the LGBTQIA+ community, professionals, academia, and religious organizations.
Progressive groups such as Sentro, Partido Manggagawa (PM), and Samahang Magdalo also joined the gathering to wave their organizational flags and share the core principles driving their endorsement.
Organizers noted that the movement was spearheaded by young volunteers inspired by Hontiveros’ legislative record and public service, aiming to consolidate grassroots support across Cebu.
While Hontiveros has stated she is open to leading the opposition in 2028, she previously clarified her stance on the unity of her political bloc, clarifying that she is willing to step aside if another opposition candidate emerges with a stronger chance of uniting the bloc and winning the presidential race.
The political landscape for 2028 continues to take shape, as Vice President Sara Duterte has already declared her intention to run for president, while recent voter preference surveys place Senator Raffy Tulfo and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo among the top potential contenders.
