The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has concluded its investigation into the tragic drowning of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes, who lost their lives last month during a team-building trip in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Following its inquiry into the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, the NBI has recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) file criminal charges against twelve individuals, including former Ateneo men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin.
The bureau determined there is probable cause to prosecute the individuals for reckless imprudence and simple negligence, both resulting in homicide.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that the bureau has completed its investigation, leaving the next steps of the legal process to the DOJ.
”The NBI’s role is already finished. It is now in the hands of the DOJ to determine its findings. But if the DOJ calls on us, we are ready to appear,” Matibag stated.
Matibag stressed that the recommendations were based entirely on the evidence and facts gathered during the probe.
”It will always be driven by the evidence, by law, and by the process. But of course, the final say still rests with the DOJ,” he added.
On Monday, the DOJ announced it had consolidated the investigation reports from both the NBI and the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG).
Despite the recommendation, no formal charges have been filed in court yet.
