Maynilad Water Services Inc. is putting the finishing touches on a massive pipeline project designed to reinforce water distribution and enhance service reliability throughout its southern concession area.
On Friday, July 31, the water utility announced that construction on 9.12 kilometers of primary distribution pipelines has entered its final phase. The ₱5.8-billion infrastructure development creates a direct link between the Poblacion Water Treatment Plant in Muntinlupa City and Maynilad’s broader distribution network.
When the facilities go live, Maynilad will be better equipped to redirect excess treated water to high-demand communities, particularly in Muntinlupa and Las Piñas. The added network capacity is expected to stabilize supply and improve pressure across the distribution system.
The project also aligns with Maynilad’s proactive response to potential climate risks brought by El Niño. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has noted active El Niño conditions across the tropical Pacific, cautioning that the phenomenon could lead to reduced rainfall, extended dry spells, and localized drought.
Maynilad Chief Operating Officer Christopher Jaime Lichauco emphasized that the new pipeline infrastructure gives the company greater operational flexibility to reroute water if supply levels from primary raw sources decline.
“Investments like this form part of a broader push to build a more resilient water system for the West Zone as climate conditions become increasingly unpredictable,” Lichauco added.
This pipeline expansion is a key component of Maynilad’s long-term water-security roadmap, which aims to diversify supply away from reliance on a single primary raw source. As part of this initiative, the utility is tapping Laguna Lake, building modular treatment plants, implementing potable water reuse programs, and expanding storage capacity. Additionally, Maynilad continues to tackle non-revenue water through aggressive leak detection, prompt repairs, and network pressure management.
Maynilad operates the largest water concession in the Philippines by customer count, acting on behalf of the state-run Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System.
Its West Zone coverage encompasses parts of Manila, Quezon City, and Makati, as well as the cities of Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon. The service territory also spans Cavite province, including Cavite City, Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario.
