“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has officially surpassed “Avengers: Endgame” to claim the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in history, taking in $360 million across North American theaters, Sony Pictures announced on Monday.
Initial Sunday estimates placed the film’s opening at $355 million across 4,487 screens, which fell just shy of the $357 million benchmark set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. However, a stronger-than-expected Sunday turnout pushed the fourth entry in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise past the previous record holder.
”Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it,” said Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.
Prior to “Avengers: Endgame,” no feature film had crossed the $300 million threshold during its domestic debut. Former record holders include 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” ($257 million) and 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($247 million). Holland’s previous web-slinging outing, 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” opened to $260 million mid-pandemic before finishing its theatrical run at $1.9 billion globally.
The record-breaking weekend was further bolstered by strong ticket sales for “The Odyssey.” Both films share key cast members Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal.
According to Rentrak, the domestic box office has surged over 15% compared to the same period last year, with total ticket sales topping $6.2 billion year-to-date.
