Star Cinema’s hit 2008 family comedy-drama “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” has earned international acclaim after securing the 75th spot on IndieWire’s prestigious list of the 100 Best Movie Sequels of All Time.
The blockbuster film, which stars comedy queen Ai-Ai delas Alas as the iconic single mother Ina Montecillo, stands as one of only two Philippine entries to make the prestigious ranking. It shares the distinction alongside veteran filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik’s “Who Invented the Yoyo? Who Invented the Moon Buggy?,” which placed at No. 87.
Founded in 1996, US-based publication IndieWire is widely regarded for its coverage of the global film, television, and entertainment industries.
In a review written for the publication, contributor Lé Baltar observed that the film extends well beyond standard slapstick, functioning as a sharp reflection of contemporary Philippine socio-political realities.
”The film’s pleasures also rest on its political inflection, setting up in the process a parody of the despotic Gloria Macapagal Arroyo regime under which the blockbuster film was made — and therefore a critique of the self-mythologizing power of assuming the image of a charismatic maternal figure to provoke a kind of electoral herd mentality in a country where the family unit is deemed sacred,” Baltar wrote.
Baltar also lauded the creative direction of the late filmmaker Wenn V. Deramas for leveraging mainstream cinema resources to craft meaningful political commentary.
”What Deramas has fashioned here is prime, though not readily flawless, entertainment that freely bends the parameters of studio moviemaking to his will,” Baltar added.
Originally released as an official entry to the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” secured 2nd Best Picture honors and dominated the local box office as the festival’s highest-grossing entry, earning ₱171 million.
