Senator Jinggoy Estrada suffered a fully torn meniscus in his left knee on Wednesday, August 26, according to clinical results from Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
The lawmaker was rushed to the hospital after experiencing a popping sensation in his knee as he stood up inside his detention room at the New Quezon City Jail.
Attending orthopedic surgeon Dr. Fernando Syquia clarified that this new left knee damage is unrelated to the pre-existing osteoarthritis in Estrada’s right knee.
Syquia noted that while both conditions will ultimately require surgery, the senator was discharged with a knee brace and pain relief medication.
Estrada was brought back to his detention cell at the Payatas facility around 4:25 p.m.
