Questions surrounding possible cost-reduction strategies at GMA Network have surfaced after the media giant began broadcasting reruns of past hit series across key weekday time slots.
The Gozon-led broadcaster recently brought back its acclaimed 2022 historical drama “Maria Clara at Ibarra” for its late-afternoon line-up, alongside a rerun of the popular 2021 romantic comedy “First Yaya” in its late-primetime block.
Industry insiders suggest the network may shift toward permanent re-runs for its 4:30 PM slot—limiting fresh afternoon drama productions to just two—while reserving its 9:30 PM slot for co-productions or blocktime partners such as ABS-CBN Studios and Studio VIVA.
The programming adjustments follow a sharp downturn in the company’s financial performance. GMA Network’s net income plummeted from ₱102 million in the first quarter of 2026 to ₱8 million in the second quarter ending June—marking its lowest quarterly earnings since competitor ABS-CBN Corporation lost its free-TV franchise.
GMA Network has yet to issue an official statement regarding the financial figures or the reported shifts in its programming strategy.
