METRO MANILA AIR QUALITY IMPROVES AMID INDONESIA-LINKED TRANSBOUNDARY HAZE

​Air quality across several parts of Metro Manila saw noticeable improvement on Wednesday after heavy haze, believed to stem from active forest fires in Indonesia, previously triggered severe pollution warnings.

​According to noon monitoring data from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), air quality shifted to a “good” rating in multiple locations, including Caloocan (University of the East), Manila, Marikina (Parang), Muntinlupa (Bilibid and Filinvest City), Parañaque, Pasay, Pateros, Quezon City (Ateneo), San Juan City, Taguig (TUP), and Valenzuela.

​Meanwhile, secondary monitoring sites recorded “fair” air readings in Las Piñas, Malabon, Muntinlupa (Bilibid), Parañaque (Don Bosco), Quezon City (SMPH Commonwealth), and Valenzuela.

​Air Quality Index evaluations track the concentration of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5. These microscopic particles of smoke and ash easily bypass the upper respiratory system’s natural filtration, traveling deep into the lungs and potentially causing chest discomfort and acute breathing issues.

​Environmental officials indicated that the regional haze is tied to transboundary pollution carried from active blazes in Kalimantan, Indonesia, transported toward the archipelago by prevailing wind currents.

​Authorities continue to urge the public to minimize extended outdoor exposure, particularly in areas where atmospheric haze remains visible.

High-risk individuals—such as children, senior citizens, and people diagnosed with cardiovascular or respiratory ailments—have been advised to remain indoors whenever possible and wear N95 masks when venturing outside.

​The sudden uptick in air quality comes after atmospheric monitoring stations in Metro Manila logged “very unhealthy” to “acutely unhealthy” air pollution levels earlier in the week.
