NAGOYA, Japan — Filipina tennis star Alex Eala expressed no regrets despite bowing out in the women’s singles semifinals of the 20th Asian Games on Thursday, October 1.
The 21-year-old tennis star absorbed a 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 defeat to China’s Xiyu Wang, securing her second consecutive Asian Games bronze medal following her podium finish in Hangzhou three years prior.
The participation came despite potential penalties she might face from the WTA tour.
“I’m really happy to have experienced this, of course, to experience the support, to be with the team and to compete for the country again,” Eala said.
“No. I feel like I have no regrets,” she added.
Eala started strong, storming to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before fending off a late rally from Wang to take the early advantage. However, the momentum shifted over the next two sets, with the Chinese netter taking control of the match despite heavy cheering from local Filipino supporters in attendance.
Eala acknowledged that Wang’s steady play made the difference in the final two sets.
“I think she was more consistent. I think I had a couple ups and downs during the match. It’s something I have to talk with my team about and process,” Eala noted.
Despite missing out on an automatic Asian Games gold medal spot for the upcoming Olympics, Eala remains in contention for a Paris berth through direct acceptance based on her world ranking.
“I think physically I’m better, more mature, more experienced, of course,” Eala reflected on her progress. “So many things. I think everything all around has improved.”
Following her Asian Games campaign, Eala is set to return to the professional circuit at the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open, scheduled for October 12 to 18.
