JAPAN TO DESIGNATE FISCAL 2027-2031 AS FIVE-YEAR INTENSIVE INVESTMENT PERIOD FOR KEY SECTORS

TOKYO, Japan — The Japanese government announced Thursday plans to designate the five-year period starting in fiscal 2027 as an intensive investment phase, focusing on 17 priority sectors such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors to drive national growth.

The initiative will be integrated into the government’s growth strategy implementation program, set to be finalized alongside the upcoming fiscal year’s budget proposal by the end of the year. The program will outline specific public and private investment targets for each designated industry.

The proposal was presented during a session of the Council for Japan’s Growth Strategy, chaired by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Selection of the priority sectors will depend on factors including potential profitability and broader economic ripple effects, with an emphasis on projects capable of boosting Japan’s potential growth rate.

To offer long-term clarity and predictability for private enterprises, multi-year budgetary measures will also be established.

Additionally, sectors vital to national economic security will be managed under a separate special account. These projects must actively support the autonomy of Japan’s socioeconomic structure, reinforce its global competitive edge, and maintain its indispensable role within the international community.
