In a historic consolidation of American animation and youth television, longtime industry rivals Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network have officially become sister networks following the finalization of Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026.
The monumental $111 billion transaction restructures the unified global media company as Skydance Corporation, bringing two of the most influential television animation hubs in broadcast history under a single corporate roof.
For over three decades, Nickelodeon (formerly a subsidiary of Paramount) and Cartoon Network (formerly part of Warner Bros. Discovery) served as the defining titans of children’s cable entertainment, competing for viewership, creative talent, and global merchandise markets.
Nickelodeon built a media empire around hit franchises including SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rugrats, and The Fairly OddParents. Meanwhile, Cartoon Network anchored its brand identity around fan-favorite series such as The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Ben 10, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Adventure Time.
With the transaction finalized, both networks operate under Skydance Corporation alongside a unified portfolio of animation production houses, including Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Paramount Animation, and Skydance Animation.
Despite operating under the same corporate umbrella, industry reports confirm that Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network will retain their distinct brand identities, content pipelines, and dedicated broadcast and streaming operations. There are no immediate plans to merge the two cable channels into a single brand or combine their respective fictional universes.
However, Skydance Corporation announced that its unified animation division will function as a “single creative powerhouse.” Across its combined network of animation studios, the corporation is targeting an annual output of at least 30 theatrical films and over 180 television series.
The corporate union has sparked widespread nostalgic reactions across social media, as fans reflect on the conclusion of one of pop culture’s most defining television rivalries. Media observers note that while the competitive dynamic between the two networks shaped youth television for Millennials and Gen Z, the consolidated library under Skydance Corporation now forms one of the largest animated IP vaults in entertainment history.
