ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Filipino gymnast Juancho Miguel Besana fell short of securing a spot in the men’s horizontal bar final on Saturday, October 17, at the 54th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held here.
The 23-year-old athlete finished 23rd in the rankings after the first two subdivisions of the opening day, recording a total of 12.733 points. His routine consisted of a 4.800 difficulty score alongside 7.933 execution points, keeping him outside the top eight competitors who will advance to the apparatus final.
Tang-Chia Hung of Chinese Taipei currently leads the standings with 14.566 points. Russian gymnasts Sergei Naidin and Arsenii Duhkno trail closely behind in second and third places with scores of 14.233 and 14.033 points, respectively.
One final subdivision is scheduled to close out the opening day of competition. Action will resume on Sunday, October 18, with three additional subdivisions, which will feature Besana’s compatriots, Carlos and Eldrew Yulo.
Carlos Yulo, a three-time world champion and double-gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, headlines the Philippine delegation as a top contender in his specialty events, the floor exercise and vault.
Meanwhile, his brother Eldrew aims to break through in the horizontal bar final, coming off a bronze-medal finish in the same apparatus at the 20th Asian Games in Japan earlier in the month.
