The Philippine National Police (PNP) has issued a stern warning against investment scams promoted by social media personalities following the arrest of a businesswoman accused of swindling investors out of ₱160 million.
PNP Chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that online fame and an operational business do not make an investment secure.
“Not everything that we see on social media is true; therefore, we advise the public to be extra vigilant in order not to fall victim to investment scams,” he said in a statement.
“Hindi dahil sikat sa social media ay agad na nating papaniwalaan. Siguraduhing lehitimo ang kanilang mga inaalok na paraan para kumita.”
Authorities reported that the suspect, whose identity was withheld, built an online following through her food enterprise before her arrest at a Pasay City casino. Investigators revealed she allegedly lured over 100 victims by promising a guaranteed monthly return of five percent on capital investments, leveraging the apparent legitimacy of her food venture.
In response to the case, the PNP has ramped up its intelligence operations, public awareness campaigns, and law enforcement efforts targeting fraudulent schemes that prey on individuals seeking extra income.
“The PNP will continue to actively pursue those behind fraudulent investment schemes as we commit to protecting citizens who only want to earn a living. We strongly advise the public to immediately report to authorities if they have been victimized by these scams,” Nartatez added.
