TYPE-MOON and Kodansha have officially announced that Kinoko Nasu’s celebrated visual novel Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoutsukai no Yoru) is receiving a brand-new manga adaptation. The upcoming launch comes just ahead of the highly anticipated feature-length theatrical anime film produced by studio ufotable.
The manga adaptation will be illustrated by Keigo Maki, best known as the creator of Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie. As a long-time TYPE-MOON enthusiast, Maki brings his detailed artistic style to the dark urban fantasy series.
Serialization is scheduled to launch in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine Issue #50 on November 11, 2026. Digital chapters will simultaneously distribute across Kodansha’s online platforms. The adaptation is developed under direct supervision to closely follow Kinoko Nasu’s original narrative, revisiting the late-1980s origin story of sorceress Aoko Aozaki.
Set during the twilight of Japan’s Shōwa era within the quiet setting of Misaki Town, Witch on the Holy Night revolves around three central figures:
Aoko Aozaki, a high school student suddenly thrust into inheriting her family’s ancient line of arcane sorcery while adjusting to life inside a secluded mansion.
Alice Kuonji, an enigmatic and reserved witch who quietly maintains secret magical traditions.
Soujyuro Sizuki, a rural transfer student unaccustomed to city life, whose unexpected arrival draws him directly into the hidden conflict between mages and witches.
The manga announcement serves as part of a wider multimedia expansion for the franchise leading into late 2026 and early 2027:
Studio ufotable’s anime film adaptation featuring the main theme song “Yoru to Ao” by supercell premieres in Japanese theaters and IMAX auditoriums on November 20, 2026. A mobile visual novel port for iOS and Android platforms is also set to launch in Japan alongside the theatrical debut.
For international audiences, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures will distribute the feature film across North American theaters, featuring both English-subtitled and dubbed formats, starting January 29, 2027.
The new manga serialization marks a significant milestone for TYPE-MOON’s classic story, expanding its reach across global print, mobile, and cinematic platforms.
