MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed appreciation for a joint statement issued by 20 business, labor, industry, and civil society organizations endorsing the government’s pursuit of sustained dialogue and diplomatic engagement with China.
The coalition commended Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro following her recent engagement with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The groups praised the DFA’s measured approach in protecting critical economic stakes, including trade, exports, tourism, and the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), while noting that China remains the Philippines’ largest trading partner.
Referencing regional trends, the organizations emphasized that other Southeast Asian nations continue to strengthen economic and infrastructure partnerships with Beijing amid global market uncertainties, arguing that the Philippines should similarly pursue mutual economic benefits while protecting its national sovereignty.
“We therefore support the DFA’s pursuit of principled diplomacy and sustained dialogue over confrontation, recognizing that a balanced and constructive relationship with China is essential to advancing Philippine economic security, national interests, and sustainable development,” the organizations stated.
In response, the DFA underscored that prioritizing diplomatic pathways does not mean compromising the nation’s sovereign rights and entitlements. The department reiterated that composure, candor, sound judgment, and principled engagement remain vital in navigating foreign relations.
The joint statement was backed by prominent organizations including the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Philippine Exporters Confederation, and the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines, alongside various labor and agricultural associations.
